Watch Out Cosi, Panera is Coming to Dupont

New construction plans for a Panera in Dupont Circle make it look like DC will have a suburban sandwich/coffee shop turf war spilling into its confines late this summer. That's right, Cosi, Panera is coming to the District. The plans call for interior build out of an existing store front, currently occupied by Lawsons Gourmet, at 1350 Connecticut Avenue, NW, directly next to Cosi.

According to Tobias Washington, a Building Manager for landlord PNGS Management Company, Panera will take over occupancy on June 1st. Construction and build out should take 90 days. Plans call for a space with over 100 seats inside and 35 outside. This will be Panera's first store inside the District.

Panera is seeking a local general contractor to perform the build out of the 5,088-square-foot restaurant to include a dining area, kitchen, service counters, storage space, and restrooms. The bid for the $250,000 project went out on April 13th and are due May 12th.

Awful news... Lawson's is a 1000 times better than some stupid, generic Panera. Go back to the suburbs. Or at least have the decency to replace Cosi instead of having the same crap next door to each other.

Fantastic news....Panera is 1000 times better than most sandwich shops in the city. Please spread your coporate tentacles to my neighborhood so I don't have to pay $14.00 for a grilled cheese and a coke.

Lawson's is beyond affordable-- $2.20 for a great egg and cheese on bagel. I'm with the first poster: keep Lawson's, boot Cosi.

KFC shoulda bought the space...not enough of them in this town...

VIVA LA DOUBLE DOWN!!!

freakin' hipsters...

Panera is so much better than Cosi, they should've kicked Cosi out.

Have you people ever eaten at a Panera? They're nasty. DC needs another Pret A Manger--fast, affordable and a taste sensation.

I like Paera, happy to have them in town.

As chains go, Panera is fine- but Lawsons is really wonderful. The salads and sandwiches are great and affordable, but I especially love how fantastic the staff are, including to each other. I go there over Cosi because the food and the people are both SO much better.

This is horrible! For someone who works right across the street and often finds Lawson's as my go to spot for breakfast or lunch, I'm not excited for a Panera to take it's place. I don't live in the city, and we have plenty of Panera's everywhere in the "burbs", so to have a great sandwhich, salad, sushi, and breakfast place to go too during the day is wonderful. And you can get good quality food at Lawson's, that you know is fresh. Now I'll have to deal with the high sodium meats and way too many calorie breakfast options of Panera, that I can get anytime when i'm at home.

great news. Now I know we can find a place that has a good menu and good value. I am tired of overpriced so called healthy food in DC. An urban Panera - love it.

I think this is beyond sad, especially because the women that work there weren't given adequate notice. Their food is healthy, inexpensive, and always comes with a smile. I've been going to Lawson's ever since I started working in the area. They will truly be missed.

I'm a huge fan of Panera and always wondered why the lack of one in DC? That being said, you can't beat the Lawson's taco salad and their breakfast is good as well! Cosi should've been the one to go ... I haven't eaten there since the exterminator said they had the worst bug infestation he's ever seen!
